Millions of Americans wear contact lenses every day, but studies show that up to 99% of contact lens wearers practice at least one risky behavior with their lenses. Improper care is one of the leading causes of preventable eye infections and even permanent vision loss.
The Dos
- Wash your hands thoroughly before handling lenses
- Use only fresh contact lens solution — never water or saliva
- Replace lenses on schedule (daily, biweekly, or monthly as prescribed)
- Clean and air-dry your case after each use, replacing it every 3 months
- Remove lenses before swimming or showering
- Visit your eye doctor annually for a contact lens evaluation
The Don'ts
- Never sleep in lenses unless specifically prescribed for overnight wear
- Don't top off old solution — always empty and refill with fresh solution
- Never rinse lenses with tap water
- Don't wear lenses when your eyes are red, irritated, or infected
- Never share lenses with anyone
