Eye Surgery
Co-Management
We coordinate your care before and after surgery — partnering with DFW's leading ophthalmologists.
Our Approach
What is Eye Surgery Co-Management?
Eye surgery co-management is a partnership between our optometrists and a surgical specialist (ophthalmologist). We handle the evaluation, preparation, and post-operative follow-up, while the ophthalmologist performs the surgery itself.
This model gives you the best of both worlds: the surgical expertise of a specialist and the personalized care of your local eye doctor. You already know and trust our team — and we'll be here every step of the way.
Your Co-Management Journey:
- Evaluation — We perform a complete eye health assessment and determine if you're a good surgical candidate.
- Referral — We connect you with one of our trusted surgical partners.
- Pre-Op — Final measurements and clearance before surgery.
- Surgery Day — Your surgeon performs the procedure.
- Post-Op Care — You return to us for all follow-up appointments, monitoring healing and managing any issues.
Why Choose Co-Management?
- Continuity of care with your trusted eye doctor
- Convenient local follow-up appointments
- Faster communication between your care team
- Personalized recovery monitoring
- Lower overall cost vs. all care at surgical center
Vision Correction Surgery
LASIK & PRK
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) are the most popular vision correction surgeries in the world. Both use a laser to reshape the cornea, correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Am I a LASIK Candidate?
You May Be a Candidate If...
- Age 18+
- Stable prescription for 1–2 years
- Adequate corneal thickness
- No significant dry eye
- Good overall eye health
LASIK May Not Be Right If...
- Very high prescription
- Thin corneas
- Significant dry eye disease
- Irregular corneal shape (keratoconus)
- Certain autoimmune conditions
What to Expect
- Procedure takes ~15 minutes per eye
- Most patients drive themselves home next day
- Vision stabilizes within days to weeks
- Results permanent for most patients
PRK vs. LASIK:
PRK removes the outer corneal layer rather than creating a flap. Healing takes longer but is preferred for patients with thin corneas or certain lifestyles (contact sports, military).
Schedule a LASIK Candidacy Evaluation — we'll determine if you're a good candidate and connect you with the right surgeon.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract Surgery & Lens Implants
Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed in the United States, with a 90%+ success rate. The cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
What We Do Before Surgery:
- Comprehensive cataract evaluation
- Measurement of corneal shape and eye length for IOL calculation
- Medical history review and coordination with your primary care doctor
- Patient education about IOL options
Intraocular Lens Options:
- Standard (Monofocal) IOL — Corrects distance vision; reading glasses still needed. Typically covered by insurance.
- Toric IOL — Corrects distance vision AND astigmatism.
- Multifocal/EDOF IOL — Designed for full range of vision (distance, intermediate, and near). Out-of-pocket upgrade.
- Light Adjustable Lens — Power adjusted after surgery with UV light for precision tuning.
Post-Op Schedule: Day 1, Week 1, Month 1, and additional visits as needed — all managed at our office.
Recovery Timeline
- Day of Surgery Blurry vision, mild discomfort — normal
- Day 1 Most patients see dramatic improvement
- Week 1 Avoid heavy lifting, rubbing eyes, swimming
- Weeks 2–6 Eye drops continued, gradual stabilization
- 1–2 Months Final prescription for glasses (if needed)
Additional Procedures
Other Surgical Co-Management
Glaucoma Surgery
When eye drops are no longer sufficient to control intraocular pressure, surgical options including trabeculectomy, tube shunts, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) may be recommended. We manage pre- and post-op care in coordination with your glaucoma specialist.
Corneal Transplant
For patients with corneal disease, scarring, or keratoconus, a corneal transplant (DALK, DSEK, or PK) may restore vision. Our team coordinates care with our corneal specialist partners and manages post-op recovery.
Pterygium Removal
A pterygium is a growth on the surface of the eye that can cause irritation, redness, and vision changes. Removal is surgical and is followed by careful monitoring for recurrence.
Dry Eye Surgery (Punctal Plugs)
For patients with chronic severe dry eye, punctal plugs or surgical closure of the tear drainage ducts can dramatically improve comfort. This minor procedure is often performed in our office or by our partners.
